How do I know what is the best eCommerce platform for my business? There are so many options and opinions...

Choosing the best platform for your particular eCommerce site is a fundamentally important thing.

There are many to choose from such as Magento, Shopify, Woo Commerce, Wix and lots of others.

Every few years we go through the process of picking a platform that we think is the current "best of generation" for the types of eCommerce sites that we build (which is for small to medium sized businesses).

Around 2010 we assessed the current platforms, and chose Magento as the most flexible and capable platform to work with. We worked with that platform (and still do work with it to some degree) for many years.

In 2019 we re-assessed and decided on BigCommerce in place of Magento which in our opinion had become too complex, unwieldy, expensive to develop and maintain and frankly also too buggy.

So what is so good about BigCommerce compared to Magento?

Here is a starting list for you to consider:

• The platform runs as SaaS (Software as a Service) - this means that all of the hosting, software upgrades, security patches, and so on are done for you - no more having to upgrade from 2.3.1 to 2.3.2 and risking breaking your site
• There is 24/7 support available as part of the platform so you can talk to someone about your eCommerce site at any time of the night or day if you have a critical issue
• It runs very fast in its own right and you will get higher scores in the Google and similar site speed tests than many other platforms without having to optimise the site yourself
• It has all of the latest social media functions built in
• It can be used to sell your products on your eCommerce site but also on many other selling platforms using the same product data and ordering system (e.g. Facebook, Pinterest, eBay, Instagram, Google Shopping)
• It has built in "page builder" tools that allow you to much more easily create information pages and blocks on your website without having to ask a developer or HTML/CSS expert to assist you
