Frequently Asked Questions

We are here to help

We answer a few commonly asked questions

How can you help me rescue a project that is failing?

Can you take over a website project from another company or individual?

First of all, we don't actively seek out rescue projects, but due to our experience and reputation in the areas of Magento and BigCommerce, we will sometimes find ourselves in the situation of being asked to "rescue" a project that has either stalled, failed or is not working as intended for whatever reason.

As we have built over 100 eCommerce sites, and rescued several projects that were started by other people, we are in a position to take advantage of our experience and expertise to help in these scenarios.

It should be noted that in some cases, you may find that starting the project again is the cleanest and possibly even a more cost-effective way forwards than trying to recover a project that has been compromised, but in other cases, it is a case of injecting some new expertise into completing work that has already been partially completed.

The best course of action if you are looking for help of this type is to get in touch with us and have an initial discussion about what you need to achieve and whether we can assist you with that.

What can you to do help fix a project that has overrun or is stalled?

If your project is Magento or BigCommerce we can assist you with, amongst other things:

  • Product Information clean up
  • Product Imports/Exports
  • Improving your information exchange between your eCommerce site and your other systems such as warehouse/stock system, delivery/shipping systems
  • Custom programming for any functions that are not fully working currently
  • Front-end style changes for any areas of the site "theme" that are not currently correct
  • Fixing of underlying platform issues
  • Fixing of hosting-related issues
  • Clear project management and planning to get you from where you are to where you need to be with your eCommerce site

What experience do you have of rescuing projects?

We have successfully rescued several Magento and BigCommerce projects over the last few years. We can provide you with examples and references to give you the assurances you need to trust us to rescue your project.

Please get in touch and we will run through your requirements and assess whether we are in a good position to help you.

How much is it going to cost me to rescue my project?

We can only estimate this once we have assessed the current state of the project and the required actions that are needed to get your eCommerce site to the state you require.

Initially we would recommend an initial meeting with one of our senior consultants to undertake this assessment, then we would be in a position to break down the project along with cost estimates.

This sort of work can be highly complex, but if you work alongside us, we can guide you through the most cost-effective way of getting your eCommerce project back on track and completed.

Startup eCommerce Websites

Can you build me a site quickly and then I take it on from there?

Yes we can get an eCommerce site up and running very quickly using our Launch Package. By purchasing this, we will set up a full eCommerce shop for you and add in 5 of your products. We will configure your payments, email notifications, basic tax and delivery settings, and then we will show you how to use the site to get you up and running as quickly as possible.

Once you have that, you will have everything you need to start adding more products and selling!

Of course, if you would like us to do additional design work, or assist you with adding more products, help with Search Engine Optimisation, or generally support you, we have packages available to provide all of that help.

The amount of assistance you need, whether down to technical ability or just not having enough time, is up to you. We can give you as much or as little assistance as you need.

What platforms do you work with?

We specialise in BigCommerce which is a next-generation eCommerce platform similar to Shopify but can be customised to your requirements. For most small to medium-sized websites, we would recommend this platform.

We do also have over 10 years experience with Magento and can assist you with existing Magento websites or partially completed projects, but we are no longer taking on new Magento builds as we do not recommend it as a platform unless you have an in-house technical team who can work with this more complex platform. Typically these days, Magento is more suitable for enterprise-level eCommerce sites.

Do you offer support after the site is built?

We offer as much or as little support as you need. Some of our clients need 50+ hours of support per month. Some need almost zero support.

If you have a BigCommerce site built by us, you automatically receive 24/7 support from BigCommerce themselves for fundamental support (such as if you need to report that your website is down). Typically our clients will purchase blocks of support hours from us, and these can be used as and when they are required.

Have a look at our support services.

What are the ongoing costs like hosting?

This largely depends on how much revenue you take through your website each year.

If you are just starting out, or you have a website that takes less than £3K per month in sales, then your hosting costs will be relatively low at around £30+VAT per month.

If you have sales of between £3K and £10K per month, the costs are going to be around £80+VAT per month.

When you start making sales of more than £10K per month and up to £25K per month, the costs go up to around £250 + VAT per month. If you are sales are higher than that, then we will give you a specific quote based on those sales.

The hosting costs are always relative to the revenue, but you will always get the same level of uptime (99.99%+) and will benefit from a large resilient hosting service.

The other thing to bear in mind here is that "hosting" costs as described above also INCLUDE any security updates and 24/7 support via phone, email or live chat. They also include platform upgrades where new features will be introduced, and in many cases upgrades for PCI compliance and security are included in the hosting costs too.

You are paying for hosting, but also hosting support, software upgrades, and security patches all in one place. This is also an arrangement that is independent of Kickstart Commerce such that if you choose to go it alone after we have built you your initial eCommerce site, then you are completely free to do so.

Kickstart Commerce will always be available however if you need any sort of assistance at any point relating to the hosting or the platform.

Why should we choose Kickstart Commerce to build our site?

This can be summarised in the following points:

  • We are a small team who have a lot of experience of eCommerce, not just from the technical point of view but also in the running of eCommerce websites
  • Our Launch Service is extremely competitive and we can offer this because we know what we are doing and have selected a platform which is very capable and modern
  • We have an excellent reputation and we always complete our projects
  • We will translate any jargon into terms that any business owner can understand
  • We only take on projects if we know we can focus on them

Migration from Magento

Do you recommend we update our Magento 1 site to Magento 2?

This is a difficult question to answer simply.

We have worked with Magento for over 10 years, and in many ways it was and is a very capable platform.

Being very capable howerver, also means that it is quite complex to develop, support, upgrade and security patch. It is our opinion that Magento 2 has moved in a direction which is more suited to large enterprises who might typically be taking well over £1m in revenue every year.

If you have in-house technical experts and have complex custom requirements, it may well be the platform for your business. But you must be prepared for high development and support costs if you go down this route.

In many cases, if your website is not taking £1m+ per year in sales, we would recommend you consider BigCommerce. This is the next-generation platform that we specialise in now and we would be very happy to demonstrate the advantages of this platform over Magento 2 if your online business is not yet at "Enterprise" level.

Why not get in touch to discuss the pros and cons of upgrading to Magento 2 and explore the alternatives.

Think very carefully before deciding on Magento 2 if you haven't fully explored the alternatives and satisfied yourself that Magento 2 is the best platform for your business at this stage.

What are the alternative platforms we could upgrade to?

We would strongly recommend you look at BigCommerce. If you would like a demonstration, please get in touch.

Choosing the best platform for your current and future requirements is a key decision which will have a high impact on the effectiveness of your online sales.

We would be very happy to discuss your requirements, and if we feel BigCommerce is a good fit we will tell you why this is the case. If we feel that Magento or another platform is a better fit, we will also tell you, even if this means that we recommend you find a different supplier to Kickstart Commerce.

What is the process to upgrade from Magento 1?

Whatever platform you are going to upgrade to, these are the key areas that you will need to undertake:

  • Migration of all of your products
  • Migration of your customer orders (if required) to keep access to historical orders
  • Migration of your customer accounts (if required) for registered customers on your Magento 1 site
  • Migration of the other content on your site such as information pages

Once you have all of your key information moved to the new platform, you can then decide on whether you want the design of the front-end to be updated, whether you want to keep or change your payment methods and so on.

Creating a new site on a new platform is not necessarily the most difficult part of a "migration". If you have any significant number of products or information pages, you will find that this area will take the longest time and if you need someone to do this for you, this will be one of the most costly areas of the project. It is therefore important for you to understand how much in-house resource you have to assist with this process and also understand that this is likely to be the most time-consuming task in your upgrade project.

If you move to BigCommerce - "Upgrading" will be a thing of the past. The platform upgrades itself and you are likely to be able to run for several years without any thought of an actual "upgrade project". Food for thought.

What is it going to cost me to move away from Magento 1?

This is an almost impossible question to answer in absolute terms, but you can use this as a guide.

If you are to migrate to BigCommerce, the cost elements will be:

  1. Cost of the initial build (estimate £1-2K)
  2. Cost of any design updates for the front end (estimate £1K but it depends on how flexible you are with this)
  3. Cost of moving your products and information pages over (£0 if you do it, £50ph + VAT if we do it - we have migration tools that can assist with this process, but at the end of the day there will still be a lot of manual checking/tweaking to be done)
  4. Hosting/Platform - see the FAQ about hosting costs (from £30+VAT pm)
  5. Domain Address - usually you will already be renewing this (from £10+VAT year)
  6. SSL Certificate - this is included unless you need an advanced certificate (from £50+VAT per year for enhanced)
  7. General support and development - £75+VAT ph - we recommend you have at least 5 hours of support purchased once you go live, but you can purchase as much or as little as you need beyond this
